2000/2001 TRAPPING SEASON SUMMARY, FORT WAINWRIGHT

and FORT GREELY, ALASKA

INTRODUCTION

 

This summary reports the furbearer harvest for Fort Wainwright and Fort Greely, Alaska for the 2000/2001 trapping season.  Monitoring of the furbearer harvest on the Army installations is one way to work with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) to maintain sustainable furbearer populations in Interior Alaska.  Fort Wainwright and Fort Greely abide by the harvest levels and seasons set by ADF&G.   

 

FORT WAINWRIGHT

 

Forty-three trappers registered thirty-one traplines on Fort Wainwright during the 2000/2001 trapping season.  

 

Table 1 lists the total harvest by sex, for the Yukon Train Area (YTA) and the Tanana Flats Training Area (TFTA).  Also listed is the number of traplines in each Training Area (TA) that trapped or attempted to trap a particular animal.

Twenty-seven trappers registered eighteen traplines in the YTA.  Seventeen of eighteen traplines sent in their harvest reports.  One of the traplines was not trapped. 

Fifteen traplines by nineteen trappers were registered in the TFTA.   Fourteen of fifteen traplines in this TA submitted a harvest report. Two traplines were not trapped for the season.

 

Three trappers registered two lines in both the Tanana Flats and the YTA.

 

The Chena River was open by permit by the ADF&G.  At least two trappers set up along the river through the Fort Wainwright main post.  Only one reported his harvest numbers.  A minimum of 2 male beaver were harvested.  These totals are not included in the above table.

 

FORT GREELY

 

Thirteen trappers registered twelve traplines on the West and East Donnelly Training Area and the Gerstle River Training are of Fort Greely for the 2000/2001 trapping season.  Ten of the twelve lines sent in harvest reports.  Two of these ten lines were not trapped.  Table 2 shows the furbearer harvest from these traplines for the 2000/2001 trapping season.

CONCLUSIONS FOR 2000/2001 TRAPPING SEASON

 

Furbearer harvest on both Fort Wainwright and Fort Greely are currently within management goals set by ADF&G.  Natural Resources Staff at both posts will continue to monitor trapper harvest and work with ADF&G to insure sustainable harvest and populations on Army lands.
